The strainer is there to catch any bigger debrees. As far as a fuel gauge, there is no simple way to put one on a Shadow because of the design of the fuel tank. You can replace the petcock with a Pingel petcock. The Shadow Spirit 750 has a very low seat height, something on the order of 26", so it is very easy for the new rider to feel comfortable and confident.
